Well, would you look at that—Americans are falling out of love with capitalism, but they still think socialism is trash. That’s the takeaway from Gallup’s latest poll, and it’s got more layers than a Democrat trying to explain how socialism isn’t actually socialism.
Let’s break it down. According to Gallup, only 54% of Americans now say they have a favorable view of capitalism. That’s the lowest number Gallup’s ever recorded in 15 years of tracking this. Meanwhile, 42% now see capitalism as a bad thing—another all-time high. So yeah, capitalism’s approval rating is sliding more than Joe Biden on a bike.
But here’s the punchline: socialism still stinks in the minds of most Americans. A solid 57% said they view socialism unfavorably. That number hasn’t budged much over the years, and it’s clear most Americans aren’t buying into the “free stuff for everyone” fantasy.
Now, if you want to see where all the crazy lives, just look at the Democrat numbers. About two-thirds of Democrats say they actually like socialism. Sixty-six percent! That’s more than the number of Democrats who know what a budget is. Even more embarrassing? Only 42% of Democrats say they view capitalism positively. That means the party that claims to fight for the people actually hates the very system that built the most successful middle class in history.
Let’s not forget—the same party that brought you three-dollar gas, open borders, and inflation that eats your paycheck now thinks government-run everything is the answer. These are the same folks who think AOC is an economist and Bernie Sanders is a prophet.
Republicans, on the other hand, are standing firm. Seventy-four percent still have a positive view of capitalism and only 14% are buying the socialism snake oil. Independents are somewhere in the middle, with a slight lean toward capitalism over socialism, 51% to 38%. So at least there’s some hope left in the middle of the road.
And here’s a fun twist: while Americans are lukewarm on capitalism and absolutely cold on socialism, they still love small businesses. A whopping 95% of folks say they have a positive view of small businesses. Why? Because small businesses are run by real people, not bureaucrats in Washington or corporate elites funding woke campaigns. Free enterprise also scores high, with 81% giving it a thumbs up. Big corporations? Not so much. They’re sitting at just 37%, barely beating socialism in popularity.
What does this tell us? Americans are tired of being squeezed by the top and lectured by the left. They don’t want socialism, but they’re also fed up with crony capitalism and mega-corporations that care more about ESG scores than customers. They want something real—like the family-owned diner down the street or the guy who fixes your truck and doesn’t ask for your pronouns.
Bottom line: the left’s dream of turning America into a socialist state is still very much a nightmare for most people. Even as capitalism takes some hits—thanks to Biden’s economic mess still echoing through the system—socialism isn’t picking up the slack. Americans know that more government never fixed anything. And if Democrats keep pushing their socialist agenda, they’re going to find themselves even more unpopular than they already are.
Keep your eyes peeled, folks. The culture war isn’t just about flags and bathrooms—it’s about who controls the economy: the people who earn it, or the politicians who want to steal it.
