The Democrats are pushing to make Washington D.C. a state. This is a typical leftist idea — meaning that it doesn’t sound so bad as long as you don’t think about it at all. Why shouldn’t the people of D.C. have better representation in the federal government?
There are a few reasons for this. First is that the people of D.C. are actually the most represented population in the country. No, they don’t have an official Representative or Senator. Instead, they have access to all of the Representatives and Senators. The population of D.C is 700,000. That same city has over 300,000 government jobs, most of which regularly interact with federally elected politicians.
What is better representation: a person who runs for election in a home state but actually lives in D.C., or a person who interacts with and listens to you on a daily basis? That’s just one reason that D.C. doesn’t need to become a state. There are a whole bunch more, and they’re actually much more important than this one.
In this video, Liz Wheeler will outline the most compelling arguments against D.C. statehood. If you still want to support this Democrat initiative after watching, you need to go back to Civics class. As dramatic as it sounds, this particular statehood would severely undermine the systems that run this country.
