Sen. John McCain’s new book, “The Restless Wave” (TLDR) has a chapter in which he says he regrets choosing former Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) as his vice-presidential running mate in 2008. McCain (or his ghostwriter) says he wishes he had followed his gut and chosen his good buddy Joe Lieberman, the pro-abortion, pro-gay, pro-illegal alien Democrat from Connecticut who switched his party registration to Independent (but still mainly caucused with the Democrats).
For those who don’t remember, Sarah Palin was the only good thing about John McCain’s 2008 campaign for president. Palin was the proto-Trump in many ways. She was a Washington, D.C. outsider who wasn’t afraid to trash the liberal media, sometimes directly to their smug faces. Palin is completely pro-life, Christian, right-wing, pro-America and took no prisoners before McCain’s handlers forced her to tone her answers down in interviews. McCain’s handlers realized, of course, that Sarah Palin was far more popular with Republican voters than John McCain could ever hope to be.
The nomination of Sarah Palin was like a shot of adrenaline in the McCain campaign. If he had chosen the liberal Lieberman to be his running mate, Obama would have likely won the 2008 election with a 50-state landslide, because the Republican base would have stayed home in droves — out of disgust.
