Was it just a slow news day at CNN? That’s what Republican Senator Cory Gardner of Colorado must have been wondering when the network’s Brooke Baldwin asked him about a briefing President Trump was giving to Senators about North Korea at Washington’s Old Executive Office Building.
While the fact that the meeting is occurring at all is a little unusual (President Obama never held special meetings to discuss national security matters), it’s just a part of Senate business in Washington, and for CNN to be making a big deal over the meeting’s location and how Senators will get there is ridiculous at best and televised trolling at worst.
Of course, that isn’t to say that North Korea isn’t a serious topic. Since the beginning of April, there’s been a showdown of sorts as President Trump has attempted to twist the arm of Chinese President Xi Jinping in applying sanctions to the rogue nation, even as the U.S. Navy is steaming several carrier ships toward the North Korean peninsula.
On April 16, the Hermit Kingdom attempted to launch a missile, in defiance of an ultimatum President Trump had issued, but it exploded at liftoff, proving that the North Koreans still have a long way to go with their weapons development program.
Therefore, Trump is certainly justified in gathering the Senate together to discuss these matters, as the government of dictator Kim Jong Un is known to be working on nuclear weapons. Even though Kim’s made numerous threats in the past and launched other missiles that have also either exploded or fallen harmlessly into the sea there’s no reason to suspect that any big announcement will be made by President Trump regarding U.S. military action or strategy. Watch as the Senator, who attended the briefing, calls out CNN host for trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill.
