A new report shows that leftwing TikTok influencers and social media “stars” on the political left are just as phony as they come across. A dark money group affiliated with the Democrat Party has been caught funneling as much as $8,000 a month to these people, to keep them bashing Donald Trump non-stop.
There are all sorts of problems with this issue. If a social media “influencer” is being paid to espouse a political opinion, shouldn’t that be reported as a campaign finance expense to the Federal Election Commission? Political campaigns would get in serious trouble if they were caught running paid ads without full disclosure.
This is a legal gray area that Congress really needs to clear up. If a local radio DJ is caught engaging in a payola scandal like this, the Department of Justice will put them in prison for a year for each violation. Why should it be any different for social media stars if they’re taking kickbacks from undisclosed donors to shill political talking points?
Why are these “new media” stars held to a different standard? This scandal also illustrates that the Democrat Party is even more unpopular than the polls indicate. Young people are not flocking to a political party that’s espousing 1920s communism. Sorry. They’re just not.
