If you’ve flown anywhere over the last six months you know what a disaster the airlines have been. Thousands of flights are being canceled and delayed every week.
And airlines aren’t compensating travelers for their mishaps or refunding them even. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is supposed to have traveler’s back, but he’s offering no help for those abandoned by airlines.
Aren’t these the same airline companies who were given massive amounts of COVID relief funding so they didn’t have to lay off workers during the pandemic? Instead of keeping employees and continuing business, many airline companies forced workers into early retirement, banked the profits and have left the nation in a bind as travelers find themselves stuck in airport terminals for hours or days.
Secretary Buttigieg continues to be missing in action as the problems worsen and more and more Americans are left to figure out transportation disasters on their own. It doesn’t help that the problems have risen to crisis levels just as air travel has spiked to pre-COVID levels, overwhelming the overwhelmed number of airlines workers who do remain.
Why can’t the Biden administration do something to help? We need more than being told to buy electric vehicles or blaming Putin or even Trump nearly two years after Biden is in office.
This is a disaster-level problem that is only getting lip-service from the left. It’s only going to get worse unless we have new leadership, and the midterms (and 2024) can’t come soon enough. Watch as members of Buttigieg’s own party call him out over his lack of action.
